I decided to take a wee bit of a break today and head into the Yorkshire Dales for some fresh air and exercise. The weather forecast looked really promising, so we decided to visit Arkengarthdale, which is to the north of Swaledale. The route I'd picked was to start at the village of Langthwaite and walk up through the old lead mine workings in Slei Gill. Well the weather forecast turned out to be very inaccurate, and we ended up with strong winds, light rain and cloudy skies. It didn't really matter though, as been out on the moors is better than been stuck in the house working all day, regardless of the weather!
The Red Loin in Langthwaite, a great place for after walk refreshments
Arkle Beck and the bridge over it into Langthwaite
One of the many field barns that you will see when walking in this part of the dales
The Fox Gloves are still still growing strong, the next purple flowers in the valley will hopefully be the heather
A view of Fremington Edge as we approached Storthwaite Hall
This was also the same spot where we turned left and headed along Slei Gill
It's a very desolate spot with nothing more than sheep and spoil heaps for scenery
Looking back down the gill, with Calver Hill in the distance
I couldn't make my mind up if this was the remains of an old building or just part of a wall
Towards the head of the gill the broad green track we started out on becomes not much more than a sheep track
One of the many old mine workings in the area, the rock fall shows how unstable they are, KEEP OUT!
The remains of an old waterwheel, here we left the gill and climbed out up to the right
Onto the flat moorland that is typical of the dales, even on a cloudy day it still has a certain beauty
I think this is a machine they used (many years ago) to cut the heather on the moors?
A view west along Arkengarthdale from Peat Moor
Heading back along the broad track towards Langthwaite, somewhere in the valley below us
Fremington Edge and Arkengarthdale as we approached the small hamlet of Booze
Calver Hill from one of the old buildings
Looking down onto Langthwaite village
Which has one very narrow street that runs down through it back to the bridge we crossed earlier
