I wanted to try a new photographic technique out on this walk, which needed great views with not a lot of effort, as I needed to lug the tripod with me. The first place that sprung to mind was Gowbarrow Fell, not too bad of a climb up to Green Hill, which gives fabulous views over Ullswater. We started from the Aira Force car park, which gives the added bonus of visiting the waterfalls. The main fall of Aira Force is always a delight, even on this visit, when there was very little water coming over it. However, the main purpose of today's walk wasn't taking photo's of the waterfalls, even though I do really love that. I wanted to try and do a 360º panoramic photo over looking the lake. I've done this before, the difference today was that I wanted to convert the standard image into a 'virtual view' where the viewer can move the view around. Well, I'll let you decide if you think it was worth it or not? You'll find two of these views as you scroll down the page, you'll need to click onto the image to view them. A new window will open and the image will upload, it may take several seconds depending on how fast your internet is. It's best to view them in 'full screen' mode, it's the button on the far right of the menu bar!
Heading through the woods towards Aira Force
The river was virtually empty after the recent dry spell
The rhododendron bushes were in full bloom in the woods
Aira Force wasn't that impressive looking today, with the lack of water in the river
Hmm, which way? Think we'll go right over the bridge this time!
After crossing the bridge it was a short walk through the woods before we headed out onto the open fell
The views very quickly improved once we were out of the tree's
This view looking along Ullswater towards St Sunday Crag is one of my favourites
A similar view from higher up the slopes of Gowbarrow Fell
Looking over the small village of Dockray towards the distant Skiddaw and Blencathra
Who's a very hot dog then?
The head of Ullswater from the summit of Green Hill
Tim taking time out on Green Hill while I messed around with the camera
Looking across towards Dockray village with the 'Dodds Range' dominating the sky line to the left
Come on you two the path goes this way!
Tim, the king of Gowbarrow Fell????
The head of Ullswater again from Gowbarrow Fell
Looking across towards Little Mell Fell
Great Mell Fell (L) and Little Mell Fell (R)
From the summit we followed the wall down towards Dockray
The village of Dockray nestles on the eastern slopes of the Dodds Range
The unmistakable outlines of Skiddaw and Blencathra
The meadows where full of wild flowers as we joined the path heading back towards Aira Force
The view south towards the distant Red Screes
A glimpse of Ullswater through the tree's as we walked back to the car park
Sheffield Pike from the tea rooms at Aira Force, best viewed with a ham bun and a bowl of spicy veg soup!
