This was another one of our walks in the Walks on The Howgill Fells book. We've driven past 'Fell End Clouds' which are situated on the northern slopes of Wild Boar Fell many times on our way to other walks. Every time we did I would say 'we must stop there one day and do a walk over the limestone'. Well after several year's of saying it, we actually made the effort and stopped to do the walk. Having now walked the route, all I can say is that I'd wished I'd done it many years ago. Even though it's a short walk, the views of the Howgill Fells and across the Eden valley are excellent. It would be great for a picnic on a warm summers evening, now there's an idea!
Looking across the meadows at Harter Fell from the old quarry where we had parked the car
Some of the local sheep looked a bit mean, especially that one in the middle!
Looking up at Fell End Clouds, marked by the line of cairns on the skyline
The meadows were full of Buttercups, it wouldn't be long before the farmers would be cutting them for the winter animal feed
After a short walk along the road we took this track off to the left onto the open moors
One of the two old lime kilns we passed on the walk, you will see plenty of these around the dales
It was a lovely warm summers morning, just right for a stroll
Which Sheena seemed to be enjoying as much as me as we made the easy climb over the grassy slopes towards Fell End Clouds
As we gained height more of The Howgill Fells came into view
Lone tree's like this are common on the limestone pavements
This one though was much more substantial, normally they tend to be stunted and wind swept?
It still made a great photo opportunity with The Howgill Fells in the background
This is the line of cairns we had seen earlier from the road
The Howgills from Fell End Clouds
Who's Sheena taking a photo of?
Me of course, but I was taking one of her at the same time!
On Fell End Clouds looking across to Stennerskeugh Clouds, the other limestone outcrop in the distance
Looking out across the Eden valley
Tim checking out the small cave which marks the start of the descent back down into the valley
It was very easy walking on a good track with more great views of the 'Howgills'
We were heading down towards that clump of tree's, well we were if my map reading skills were right!
Hater Fell with the Calders, Bram Rigg, The Calf ridge to the left, which we did several weeks ago
Another view across the Eden valley, you can just about make out the line of the Pennine's through the haze
As we lost height the limestone pavements turned into clumps of limestone boulders!
All to soon we were back at the car after a short but very enjoyable walk
